What Kind of Printer Do You Need?

Do you sometimes find yourself longing for the days when you only had one or two options in the type of printer you could buy? It certainly was easier when you didn’t have to choose between inkjet and laser, single- and multi-use. It can still be a relatively simple decision. All you have to do is look at where the printer will be located, what it will be used for, and how much ink and toner supplies are.

As to size, an inkjet printer usually fits quite well in a small space, such as on a desk or table. An inkjet printer also lends itself well to printing high-quality photos and graphics, and the ink cartridges it uses are only about $20 to $30. This is a good choice for a home office or small business.

Laser printers are the printers you see in offices, stores and other businesses as they are primarily designed for printing out text documents in straight black ink. The difference here is the cost of the ink vs. the expense of printing. Laser printers use toner cartridges and while they are more expensive per cartridge, the amount of pages you can get from each purchase is about 10x the amount of pages from an inkjet cartridge. These are perfect for the home office if you need to print a lot of documents. Laser printers have become much more compact and much less expensive in recent years.

A Combo printer is a printer that has multiple functions available. These may include printing, both black and white and color, scanning, media readers and even a fax option. If you need something for your home office to cover all of these functions, a combo printer is the way to go. These are normally inkjet printers and they will use ink cartridge refills. You can do a variety of tasks with this type of combo printer setup and there are a large variety available from which to choose.

Will you want to be able to print directly from your computer? Then, you will need a USB connection and a port to put it in. Consider the exact purpose for which your printer will be used when making this decision.

The decision as to which printer to get doesn’t have to be a hard one. Just figure out exactly what you need and want in a printer, then choose the one that fits all your specifications.
