To most, the importance of a device driver is dependent on updates and on getting the right functions with the computer. However, there are several mechanics that are intertwined with this particular tool for your computer. There are two main layers that are included in device drivers. The first is the logical layer and is in charge of taking data and processing it so it can go into a port or disk driver. The normal process of communication begins with the physical layer that goes to the data that is then processed. However, in certain operating systems, the data will go to the logical layer first for data processing. This means that both layers have to be able to communicate back and forth to each other to retrieve data and to use this data to communicate with the rest of the computer for specific functions.

For instance, the Windows operating system will use these two main layers for communication. A Linux system; however, will have separate modules that are used for more specific devices, such as alterations in the audio or video that you may want to personalize.
